hello im very interested in invisalign

Monday, November 24th, 2008

Q. hello im very interested in invisalign, i was jus wondering if they would have an effect on my teeth, because i have quite a bad overbite! and i was also wondering about the cost of this product?

A. Hi All cases are different as are the costs. I would recommend a consultation to assess your suitability. The dentsit should be able to give you a clearer idea of costs as well but these are on average £3000 for both jaws.

Is Chlorine Dioxide a legal substance If so is it harmful to the enamel

Monday, November 24th, 2008

Q. Is Chlorine Dioxide a legal substance. If so is it harmful to the enamel. I have had laser teeth whitening with an organisation that practices a non-bleach technique with this gel. A gentleman that I work with has researched this and came up with nothing but a friend of his is claiming that it is harmful to the enamel. Please confirm if this is or not the case. Thank you

A. Chlorine dioxide is usually used by beauticians during unlicensed treatments. As such you have no standardisation controls as to the strength or other addititives. As the treatment  has already been carried out the first hurdle of possible harms has been cleared. In general the procedure carried out is classified as dentistry and if you complained to the GDC (general dental council) or your local trading standards it is likely that they would be stopped from trading.
Some mouthwashes use chlorine dioxide in a safe formulation eg REtardex.

I would like to ask if fixed lingual braces could applicable to my case

Monday, November 24th, 2008

Q. Hi, I would like to ask if fixed lingual braces could be applicable to my case as I am not very keen on labial ones: my problems are: over bite, crowded upper front teeth and upper jaw needs widening. thank you very much!

A. Lingual braces are very good if you can tolerate the braces on the inside of your teeth.  If you do not want metal braces to show, clear aligners such as clearstep or invisalign are a great alternative.

Hi could you please tell me how long it is safe to chronic discharging sinus for

Friday, November 21st, 2008

Q. Hi could you please tell me how long it is safe to leave a chronic discharging sinus for?, UL1 ive had it for about a year doesnt really bother me, i burst it every day and place TCP on it,asthetically its a perfect looking tooth already had two apecectomies next stage inplants for me, crowns are either side of UL1 is a temp bridge a possibility, do not want a denture, help many thanks

A.

You probably dont want the answer, but the outlook for the tooth is poor and you should investigate taking it out. the longer the infection runs, the greater likely bone loss on healing. The will affect the success of future replacement options such as bridges and implant.
I’m happy to take a look if needed (no charge)

I’m wondering if lingual braces will be suitable for me

Friday, November 21st, 2008

Q. Hi, I’m wondering if lingual braces will be suitable for me? I’ve previously looked into invisallign but was told it was not suitable. My problem I’d like to correct is crowding at the bottom. Although I’ve been told my top teeth are all shifted to the right so these would need to all move (which apparently is a lot more work). I also have two teeth which are rotating due to missing adult teeth that are non existant! I am 28 and have 2 baby teeth left in tact. My wisdom teeth are also fully erupted on my bottom so they are causing even more crowding. I’m guessing this sounds like a massive job? I’d like to have ocnfirmation that something is possible – I’ve been somewhere and was told it was would take too long and made to feel ashamed! so I’m at my wits end! I’d appreciate your feedback.

A. Hi

I am sorry to hear about your circumstances.

I am confident there is way to get your cheif complaint treated. Of course i can not comment on the methods , because a full examination would have to be carried out. You may require orthodontics alone or a combination of orthodontics and restorative work. Again it is very difficult to say without a clinical and radiogarphic examination.

I just received 3 implants last year

Friday, November 21st, 2008

Q. I just received 3 implants last year. Cost was over 5000.00 and was performed by an oral surgeon. One implant failed and the oral surgeon ended up replacing it and threw in an extra implant at a reduced cost. (Total now is 4) Everything healed Great. My regular dentist has had the partial made by a lab. The partial is actually a bridge covering the 4 implants and a couple other missing teeth. He is charging almost a 1000.00 per tooth. Also charging 2400.00 for implant parts?? He called it precious metals? What would that be? He never mentioned that cost up front before doing this work. I feel I’m getting ripped off. The charges keep adding up.

A. Hi

You need to talk to your dentist and go through the plan made at the time of treatment to make sure that you’re only paying for what you agreed and to make sure there won’t be any more extra fees

How succesful are tooth implants

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

Q. How succesful are tooth implants? my dentist suggested that they are not always succesful

A. Nothing is guarenteed to be 100%  successful but implant dentistry has some of the highest success rates  in dentistry provided you do not smoke and have good gum health.

What can I eat and drink whilst whitening my teeth

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

Q. What can I eat and drink whilst whitening my teeth and how long do I have to stay away from certain food and drink?

A. It is best to avoid things that stain teeth during the whitening procedures such as tea, coffee, red wine, spanish and indian food.  I would not have these foods within 6 hours of whitening but ideally you should avoid them for at least 24 hours after whitening.

My gums are receding day-by-day inturn increasing length of teeth

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

Q. My gums are receding day-by-day inturn increasing the length of my both front teeth and my gums bleed very frequently.since i dont have an insurance i never consulted a dentist.which treatment/surgery do you recommend for me(plz include the cost of the surgery) & which dental insurance is best for me???

A.

It sounds like you have gum disease. This needs to be dealt with otherwise you are at risk of loosing your teeth. Unfortunately I don’t know of any insurance scheme that would cover this. If there were then just like medical insurance it would not cover pre existing conditions.
Many dentists have finanace plans which allow the cost to be spread over a number of years. This will be your best option. Treatment of gum disease is fairly involved and would cost between £500 and £800

can you tell me which is the best options for long teeth whitening

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

Q. can you tell me which is the best options for long term teeth whitening.will zoom whiten all the teeth or just those where can be seen when you smile.

A.

Whitening carried out at the dental practice ( Zoom is one example) usually works on the visible surfaces. Tray systems used at home usually work on the whole arch of teeth.
Complete Zoom! treatment packs provide an additional 2-3 night tray system to to top up the work done in the chair.

The end result of both should be similar if the procedures are correctly followed but the route to acheive it boils down to personal preference.

As a clinician I might prefer one to another if the patient has issues with sensitivity or want to match to the shade of existing porcelain crowns / veneers.

I’m having Lingual braces fitted tomorrow

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

Q. Hi, I’m having Lingual braces fitted tomorrow and am 31. Recently having spoken to my local dentist I am regretting having chosen the lingual option with the Orthodentist (I chose this for aesthetic reasons as my work involves presenting to outside clients etc). He advised that Linguals are no good – is this the case?? Also how can I ease into the Lingual braces quicker as I understand that eating and talking will be harder??

A. Some people really can not tolerate lingual braces and some really like them.  Other options are removable aligners such as invisalign. A lot of my clients love invisalign and choose them so they can take them out out for important meetings but once they get used to them I find most people keep them in all the time.
