Friday, October 31st, 2008

Q. I have an overbite, I would like straight teeth but my orthodontist said I would need an operation to correct my jaw to make his happen he explained that the whole process could take 3 years, im 22 now and really don’t want to go through 3 years of treatment, is there anywhere I could have cosmetic dentistry done to make my teeth straight?

A. Hi
the need for surgical correction of over bites is dependent on the severity of the problem. It already appears that you’ve taken expert advice, maybe you should get a 2nd opinion if you’re not sure if you want to follow this line of treatment, however sometimes for severe overbites surgical correction is the only option.

Thanks

My fear my phobia, people just dont understand

Friday, October 31st, 2008

Q. My fear my phobia, people just dont understand! to most people i know they think its a big joke, But its not , because to me this is my worced fear ever,Doctors and friends have said to me”"”. (don’t be a big baby, whats your problem, stop being a wimp just go theirs nothing to be scared of just sit in the chair and relax they wont hurt you) yea rite___ I’ve always had a problem from as far back as i can remember at the age of 12 one summer i was walking past a pub when a loads of people came out of a wine bar fighting i got caught up in it all the next thing i had a pint pot pushed in my face it broke over half of my front tooth i could not let my dad see it because he would have gone mad at me as i should not have been in the town centre at that time , so late at night. I made an appointment myself, i went there on my own, i should never have gone on my own .i was scared i did not want to go, the dentist said that he would put a temp cap on ,he began with some force he poked and proderd in my mouth he said i needed some fillings, then he got a drill out and began to start drilling in my mouth i panicked and pushed him out of the way on to the floor , the nurse talked me in to sitting back down eventually put the cap on but i would not let them use the drill He said i would have to go back for the cap to be done properly, I did not made another appointment as i was so scared i just ran out of there as quick as i could and went home I did not go back at all. After a few months when the cap started getting a bit loose i got some super glue and glued it back in, i did this for a few years, I finally came off when i was about 17 it didnt hurt, and when it did it really hurt when any air got in to it, i had to make an appointment so went to some other dentist in Firth park Sheffield He did the same got the drill out and began to drill into my gum he said it was to get the nerve out i screamed the place down, after some stuggle i got up and punched the nurce, also i hit out at the dentist eventually after a struggle theyd put another temp cap on I did’nt make another appointment, i was in so much pain i just went home and took loads of pain killers. It was a couple of years before i went again, i continued to use superglue untill i had to go again there was one dentist in Sheffield near Hyde park flats. Im sure he was drunk at the time he really hurt me just looking im my mouth, he did’nt do any thing at that time as i asked him not to. even tho he wanted to He made me another appointment, i went but it was’nt the same person when i went back it was some one else he treat me like a piece of meat, and talked to me as if i was a dog or something he dragged my mouth open and really hurt me i just got out of the chair and told him to get his dirty hands of me, never went back i kept on super gluing my teeth back in 1992 i got married to the now x husband, it didÂ’nt last very long five or six weeks he was very violent towards me, he beat and raped me on several occasions he grabbed me by the face and squeezed my cheeks so hard that my back teeth cracked and broke off, Two of my front teeth had cracked off too, as soon as he left the house i searched for some super glue and quickly stuck them back in .when i left him the only way i could get away from him was i got out of the bathroom window because he had locked me in the house, as he often did, I had to save the train fair up by collecting pennies together so i could get the train to Sheffield as i was living in Derbyshire at that time. From then ive some how kept on using superglue to keep my teeth in i had managed tp do this for at least 7/8 years they had croded from the glue and now i was then sticking all 3 front teeth in with super glue they was only just holding together 2 years ago a friend of myn’e has a friend who is a dental nurse she talked me into going to her dentist she said her boss was brilliant and was really good, and that i should not worry. id b okay i trusted her, What a fool i was…… it was a nightmare i couldnt wait inside the waiting room so i said id wait in the car, then when it came to it, it took my friend over an hour to get me out of her car before i would go in to see the dentist, She only wanted to take out my teeth there i couldnt belive it and then i would’nt let her, there’s not any chance that i would let her do it, she took an impression for false teeth, the only reason that i did’nt kick off was because i knew the dental nurse my friend made me the next appointment then brought me back home , a couple of weeks later my friend took me back after the same incident as last time bu

t it was much harder to get me out of the car ,,, I finally i went in and i was given the false teeth on a pallet the dentist try’d to put them in but it looked terrible horrible the teeth on the pallet were nothing like the other ones they were sticking out one more that the others , I looked a right mess and so uncomfortable i could not wear it / them My fears, that i dont want to have false teeth dont want them to be able to come out, I know i would’nt beable to talk properly. and they would fall out, theyre for old people, More so I know that i cant not go backwards and forwards to have treatment to go for pain over and over again and again for years of treatments as my teeth are in bad condtition , i cant bring myself to do this to myself, i would rarther end my life than go through all that. i have been reading up over the internet over the last few years The quickest available treatment are inplants they can be completed in just 3 visits or i saw on the news last year of a treatment with inplants done with lazer surgery that only takes 60 min to complete, this treatment is now avalable but i dont know how or where from I am really embarrassed about the way i look i cant be myself anymore, it feels like every ones looking at me ive heard people talk about me behind my back and making comments about me I dont want people to think that about me, i have put loads of weight on because i dont do anything or go anyware i am so asshamed of my self over this last couple of years I feel more horible about myself i dont want any one looking at me like this. i dont want to go out any more i have no family to speak of that could help me, My mum passed away when i was 12 after my dad re- marrid he never spoke to me since because i did not get along with her i couldnt accept her taking the place of my mum and he now hasnt spoke to me for over 23 years, all the rest of my family are living abroad, all my grandparents have passed away some of my friends in the past have said theyd help me but have never followed it throo,, my daughter is no help as i are having some problems with her too. i really do not know what to do anymore i hope someone can help me before its too late ! over the last few years ive been to the doctors many times , ive looked up information on line, re, the dentist and nerviousness over the last year and a half ive been backwards and forwards to the doctors and havent got anyware, the first time i saw dr keba i explaind myself my fear, my phobia to him i dont think he understud what i was saying he gave me a sick note for 3 months told me to go and sort it out, the next time i went to the doctors it was doctor keba again i asked him who can i ask for help he said it wasnt his department all he could do was give me the number for the manchester dental hospital, its bad enough just making an appointment at the doctors nevermind ringing the dental hospital he then gave me some meds they were called cipramil and then gave me another sick note for three months, I thought the tablets would help me but they only made me feel worse i was sick several times i felt more depessed than ever before, i didnt feel like doing anything at all to help my self my house went to pot, i just stayed in bed, and did nothing, i felt much worce Meanwhile i wasbn passed from pillar to post from the dss i have applyd for income supp, incapacity benafit allowence & job seekers allowence i have been passed from one department to another, after my sick note had expired i went to the doctors hoping that this time he would understand how far my fear had progressed more so, i got my freind to make me an appointment at the doctors with dr keba, when i got there it wasnt dr keba it was someone elce, i tryed to explain to him that i was realy scared of the dentist but i didnt seem to get through to him he just wrote me the manchester dental hospital, i asked him if he could ring them for me, he said he couldnt do that,he told me just ring them theyle sort u out, he then gave me another sick note…. Icouldnt bring my self to ring them, i tryed but just couldnt. i was sent to manchester medical centre for a medical, they said they would only b asking me questions, so i went, when i got there he asked me loads of questions but n one of the questions really applied to my problem . they said i am not allowed incap because i did not get enough points ( i have enclosed there result ) over the last year i have I have been passed from one department to another by the dss i cant claim income support any more or incap benefit, the dss have said that i can claim job seekers allowance. They say that i am eligible to work, dont get me wronge i am capable to work, i am physically ,but at the moment i can not go out looking the way i do, be lucky if i go out just to the shop, i dont go out and visit my freinds any more Never mind to be in a public place working with people,I donÂ’t go out of the house, i donÂ’t speak to people anymore, i am so ashamed of my self and the way i look, i was told that i should beable to claim to claim job seekers allowance which i told them i couldnt go out to work , it was the only way i can get some money to support myself and my 16 year old daughter and pay my rent when i put a claim for job seekers, i asked if there was any kind of courses that i could do from home as i have a computer and the net at home he said no they don’t have any funding for this, i did look for jobs but i know that i could not be able to face any one looking like this. as appearances count i also sometimes can not speak properly with out any teeth All this is causing me so many problems I don’t know what to do.anymore, I do not know who to turn to to ask for help, I feel if i end it all it would make every ones life that bit easer,,, my rent is not being paid and i have not had any money for weeks and i cant manage any more im in court on the 28th of august they are going to take my house of me the next time i went to th doctors yet again it was a diffrent doctor she told me that i couldnt have any more sick notes because she had recived a email from the medical centre in manchester saying that i wasnt allowed to have any more sick notes Now i cant claim anything from the dss i have no income at all i am not allowed to recive treatments from any ware i cant get any dental plan because i have no money comming in. im stuck and dont know what to do!

can i have dental implants after mrsa

Friday, October 31st, 2008

Q. dear sir, i have had mrsa, and as a result of the treatment to combat this infection (i am now mrsa negative and have been for 5 years) had also been on treatment for depression which i am nolonger on,between the treatments, i have been told by a specialist that my saliva glands are not working properly anymore and as a result have had a number of teeth removed at the back. all my front teeth are fine and im on a high fluride toothpaste and biotene oral gel to keep them that way. i was wondering if you can offer a implant treatment for my missing teeth and for a few

damaged teeth that i still have? im 27 and im really against plates and dentures and would rather pay for implants.ive always had great teeth and a great smile and im not prepared to have this spoilt by dentures.

A. many thanks for your enquiry, there is no reason why you are not suitable for dental implants. hope this is helpful.

do you know a dentures dentist in East sussex brighton

Friday, October 31st, 2008

Q. I am a 44 year old woman who has been wearing dentures since the age of 18. I don’t have any problems in my mouth, but haven’t had my dentures changed for about 8 years, so am ready to have new ones done as colour and fitting is not so good now. However the dentist I have had all these years has now retired, and I need some advice on where to go please. I want some really good looking and fitting teeth. I live just outside Brighton, East Sussex. Please help.

A.

I would recommend searching on the word “prosthodontist” on the internet. If you find a registered specialist ( on the General Dental Council’s GDC Specialist list ) you should be in the roght area. Alternatively go to the GDC website and look for specialists in your area. The list will not be contain all the possible names but it is a good start.

Q. My dentist told me the bone underneath my veneer is to small and there is no other way to correct this but to pull the tooth. Is there any other way to keep my veneer

A. Hi

I am sorry but I dont understand the question. Under the veneer is tooth substance , not bone.

I have very very bad teath i have a set of dentures

Friday, October 31st, 2008

Q. Hi I have very very bad teathi have a set of dentures holding 5 teath at the top with one missing i also have very badly decayed and rotting teath top and bottom i have been scared of dentsists since i was 15 im now 31 and had a bit of a dentistry nightmare i am soon going to have a baby with my new girlfriend and would love to be able to smile / eat and just generally not worry about the pain any more its been on going pain for about 4 years i feel its time i do something is this available on the Nhs many thanks

A. Hi

I’m sorry to hear of your problems. Obviously I would need to see you to gve a full assessment of the condition of the individual teeth, however it sounds like you might need most of your decayed teeth removed. An  NHS dentist should be able to provide you with dentures once the teeth are taken out, unfortunately fixed teeth held with dental implants are only available on a private basis so you may need to seek expert advice from a dentist local to you.

Thanks I hope this helps

I am now prolonging the mild discomfort, and lack of confidence

Friday, October 31st, 2008

Q. Hi, I’m 21 years old and, although I do my best to maintain my teeth, I feel I am now prolonging the mild discomfort, and lack of confidence they create, plus I am guessing that eating on one side of my mouth to avoid pain cannot be healthy long term. I have many fillings in many teeth and should have cared for my teeth much more during childhood and my teenage years. I am at the stage now where the constant trips to my dentist are costing me hundreds of pounds a year due to fillings falling out etc, and as a result I have decided to restore them once and for all. I am in

terested in a full mouth reconstruction, however, all my teeth are still in place, albeit with a golden glow, only broken by areas of black; would the fact they are still there cause a problem or limit my options? I have read about implants, mini implants and bridges, as I would obviously want to avoid dentures if at all possible. I am hoping that I can only have work on the teeth that are on show when I smile, both upper and lower, and simply have fillings in the back teeth. It seems to me that a bridge would be my cheapest option, with implants being the most costly, but would a bridge be able to extend from one upper 6 across to the other and the same for the lower teeth? Also, I would like the ‘false’ teeth to be quite white, as they would not be on show with any of my other teeth; would this be possible? If it were possible to have a pair of bridges of this size, could you advise me as to an approximate cost I would pay. If a bridge of this size was not possible mini implants would be my next choice, however, I am unsure of how common surgeries with this option are; could you please advise? And would the mini implants also be able to extend from the above stated teeth, and could you please advise on a approximate cost for this method with my estimated sizes? I understand that these surgeries depend on factors such as gum and bone structure, but, if my mouth is able to accommodate, as mentioned above would I need to have my remaining teeth removed (at extra cost?) or would they preventnall together? Thank you for your time

A.

Thank you for all your questions.

It is impossible to answer all  these questions without a consultaion. I would recommend you book a consultation, to allow for a full mouth examination .

Friday, October 31st, 2008

Q. If a patient said to you “My bite has changed. My front bottom teeth touch the back of my front top teeth before the rest of my teeth touch. When I close my mouth now (in order for my back teeth to touch), there is a lot of pressure created where my front bottom teeth are pressed up against the backs of my front top teeth. My bottom front teeth press up against the backs of my top front teeth, and inhibit me from closing my mouth. These symptoms have developed within the passed few months. ” What would you recommend? I had a dentist tell me that to treat this you had to file down the backs of my top teeth, and he also filed down the tops of my bottom teeth (even though he said my bottom teeth were not going to be touched). This did not help at all, and now my bottom teeth look slanted and uneven, and are now sensitive to cold temperatures. Also, I feel like the condition has worsened, and this deviation in my bite has only gotten worse as time progresses.

A. Hi

The teeth can drift causing this problem if there is an underlying problem with your bite or if the teeth are loose due to gum disease. It sounds like you need to see a dentist specialising in this sort of problem, perhaps an orthodontist, or periodontist if the gums are involved. If you would like further help please contact me at the practice  and we will be happy to help you

Q. Please can you tell me what the different levels of Invisalign accreditation are? From the Invisalign website (UK) it looks like there are at least three types of doctor: Platinum Elite, Platinum and Silver but I can’t find information on what each one means. Thank you, J.

A. hi many thanks for your enquiry, the status is on how many cases the dentist does per year. platinum elite is a minimum of 80 cases per year. platinum is 40 cases and then silver is from 0-40. hope this is helpful.

Teeth Whitening & Breastfeeding

Friday, October 31st, 2008

Q. Teeth Whitening & Breastfeeding – Please could you advise me if there is any risk associated with whitening my teeth while still breastfeeding my baby. I was advised by my dentist that there was not, however the information accompanying my polanight teeth whitening system advises not to use this solution while pregnant or breastfeeding. I am therefore unsure whether or not it is safe to proceed. Can you help? Thank you.

A. hi many thanks for your enquiry, i dont feel there is any risk of whitening the teeth and breast feeding however if the instructions on the polar night system say not to do this while you are breast feeding then i would have to follow the official line and say i advise not to do it.

I have had a succession of bad luck with having crowns

Friday, October 31st, 2008

Q. I have had a succession of bad luck with having crowns on my two upper front teeth. I am at present, seeing a fourth dentist to try and rectify the situation. I had temporary crowns fitted that were fabricated by the fourth dentist based on the ones that were fitted by the third dentist. My problem is that the crowns do not seem to go right up to the gum (at the back, not front). They are also both quite sharp at the tops on the back of the crowns. I am catching my tongue on them a lot when I speak or swallow. My tongue seems to naturally rest on the tops of the crowns at the back also. I am experiencing a kind of burning/stinging sensation above the backs of the crowns and my tongue is covered in tiny bright red dots at the tip of the tongue. The fourth dentist is of the opinion that I should now look at having orthodontic work carried out. This would be to rectify the gaps that I have to the teeth either side of my two front teeth and also to push the two front teeth back. He has told me that I will need to continue wearing tempory crowns whilst having the orthodontic treatment done. I dont understand why I cant have the all porcelain permanent crowns fitted before having orthodontic work done. Is this standard practice? Could I be experiencing this discomfort and pain because the temporary crowns are not fitting right up to the gum margins at the back? I am seeing the dentist tomorrow as I am now getting exasperated at being in such constant discomfort with temporaries. I was suffering from this complaint with the temporary crowns that I had fitted beforehand and this has now been going on for nearly two months in all. The reason being that the first dentist left me in considerable discomfort and I lost confidence in him. The second dentist managed to crack the back of the right temporary crown and I was experiencing a lot of pain in the right tooth. I was referred to Bristol Dental Hospital and at the time had severe swollen glands and pain in the right tooth. He took an xray and could find no signs of infection from this but seemed to be of the opinion that I needed a root canal treatment. I went to the fourth dentist for a second opinion on this and he removed the temporary crowns and did a sensitivity test. He thinks I may need a root canal at some point as the tooth seems to be hypersensitive. If a tooth behaves in this way, is this irreversable? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

A. hi many thanks for your enquiry, firstly it is common practice to leave the temporary crowns in the mouth while the orthodontic treatment is being carried out cause the spaces between the teeth may change and the crowns may need adjusting to fit into the new space. secondly the root canal treatment may be necessary as 1 in five teeth that are crowned over a five year period will die and need root canal so this is a big possibility. hope this information is useful.

I have booked an apointment to have my teeth whitened

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

Q. I have booked an apointment to have my teeth whitened. But since have been looking at reviews on the internet and I am now concerned about the procedure and results. Alot of people have been very disappointed with the results and suffered severe pain during after the procedure! Some one commented on lasting for over a year! I really am questioning wether this is the right thing to do!

A. Hi

Tooth whitening is a very safe way to improve the appearance of teeth for a large number of patients. However there is often some (transient) sensitivity. This normally subsides after a short period. The improvement in the clour with in-surgery whitening can last for several years depending on your intake of tea, coffee, red wine etc..

You may also wish to consider professional home whitening using custom made trays. This whitens the teeth more slowly (it usually takes 2 weeks) and usually causes less sensitivity. You can also keep topping up the whitening by wearing the trays 1 night a month. At my clinic we use the Enlighten system and we get very good results, usually with a minimum amount of sensitivity

How do you fix buck teeth without wearing braces

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

Q. How do you fix buckteeth without wearing braces? i really want straight teeth, but i don’t want have to wear braces is that a possiblity?

A. It is possible but you will have to have your teeth drilled down and crowned fairly signifiacntly especially if they are prominent. This will definately decrease the life span of your teeth. I think that if your teeth are proclined then it would be unwise to rule out braces. Invisable braces are available and you should investiogate this option before you have your teeth filed down

Hello, i have one front tooth longer than the other

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

Q. Hello, i have one front tooth longer than the other and was advised if got a brace it would drop back down again in time, i was advised that i could get a slice of the longer tooth so my two front teeth would be level and my dentist would build it up with veneer, do you think would this cause sensitivity or discolouring in time? Any advice greatfully received Thank you.

A. I would have the brace option. The tooth will not move down again if you have permanent retention on the back of the tooth to hold it in place. If you are not keen on having braces then a veneer is definately an option. You will have to have some tooth shaved down and the preparation should be kept within enamel. There shouldn’t be sensitivity if this is the case and you normally wouldn’t get any staining

my teeth was darkened by antibiotic

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

Q. my teeth was darkened by antibiotic because of my health (SS). can anything be done to brighten my smile and how much will it cost me. thank you

A. Hi

It is very difficult to give a treatment option without looking at the type and amount of discolourisation.

The options available are
1. professional home whitening. This would be required to be done for several months – or
2. dental veneers

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

Q. Hi, I had a removable brace as a young teenager (now 24) to correct 1 tooth that was movingback inwards behind the front 2 teeth. As you look at the teeth its the one next to the front teeth on the right(10?) However over the past few years it has been moving back as it was when I was younger. My other teeth are fine but its just this one thats bugging me. Can another removable brace help move it back where it should be? Not sure if I could handle full braces or afford them!! Thanks Kenny

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

Q. hi iv jus brushed my teeth and noticed there are two dull patches on my front teeth,it looks like the enamel has come away and feels slightly rough when i rub my tongue along them. is this permenant or can my dentist polish them smooth? im worried thier going to be porus to staining now? thank-you rachel x

A. Hi Rachel

Tis sounds like erosion of the enamel. You should be able to have white filling bonded over the efect or if more severe porcelain veneers. If the patch is very small you should be able to ask your dentist to smooth it over

Im 19, and my teeth are all chipped and unleveled

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

Q. Hi, Im 19, and my teeth are all chipped and unleveled off years back when i was young from falling off bikes etc, one of my tooths is chipped, had it filled twice and it just fell out, i was thinking about implants.. any ideas on price wise.. Thanks

A. as long as the teeth are sound and not moving instead of implants crowns and veneers may be the answer. it would be best to seek a cosmetic dentist for this. the average cost per crown or veneer would be £600 – £1200. hope this is helpful
