Q. i have always been unhappy with my teeth both sets of my upper right and upper left incisers are twisted my dentist recomened a set of for crowns with a private quote of £1000 i am on income surport and can not afford to pay this much my dentist is also a nhs practice
A. Hi
Unfortunately you would not be able to get this treatment on the nhs because it is a cosmetic problem.
Many practices offer payment plans where you can spread the cost on a monthly basis to fit your budget.
I hope this helps.

Q. HI, MR CAPLAN I HAVE VENEERS FOR ABOUT 21/2 YR. NOW. AND NOW U CAN SEE MY TEETH BEHIND MY VENEERS. WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT THIS. THE VENEERS ARE WHITE AND MY TEETH BEHIND ARE A LITTLE YELLOW. AND ALSO CAN I GET VENEERS WHITING?
I am afraid I do not know how you could whiten your teeth behind your veneers unles s they had been previously root canal treated – if so they could be internally bleached.

Q. HI Im a 35 year old female and have always hated my teeth as four of them are not strait. I want to have a invisalign brace fitted but am unsure on how to go about choosing what denist to go to. how do i know if they are qualified to fit this brace for me and how much it will cost?
A.
Invisalign has an accreditation system, platinum accreditted users will carry out this treatment on a regular basis. Alternative is look for someone on the General Dental Council (GDC.org.uk) specialist list who also does invisalign. Cost around £3-5000.

Q. im a 26 year old guy and have buck teeth im at the stage of my life im thinking i should have done somthing about my teeth when i was younger so im asking what can be done for me, how long will it take, and how much will it all cost
A. hi many thanks for your enquiry, there are many options to help with your buck teeth, you could use orthodontics to help move the teeth into the correct position, or you could use veneers which would require preparing the teeth to put them in the correct position and then veneering them to look good. the average cost of both treatments would range from £4000 to £6000. hope this is helpful.

Q. hello, i was thinking of having dental cosmetics done. how much would it cost to have a gap between my two front teeth fixed and also the tooth next to my two front teeth sticks out. the teeth next to that one are false and are attached to my other teeth. thank you very much
A. Hi
It is very difficult to give a pricing without looking at the mouth.
There are different ways of moving teeth orthodontically – invisable braces, traditional braces, etc. Prices can start from £2000.00.
Also there is the possibility of having dental veneers.
I hope this helps

Q. I have a very lose front tooth which my dentist says will fall out sooner rather than later, How do I go about having a temporary denture fitted. cause during making an impression this will bound to, maybe pull the offending tooth out..What alternatives do i have, this is really starting to worry me.I,m not the greatest dentist visitor.even at my age of 57 still so nervous but the thought of a gap in my front teeth is a terrible thought..regards for you time and help
A.
There are a few options using a fibre reinforced splint or fibre reinforced bridge that can be made at the chairside from your existing tooth. They are not often used as a permenant solution but it would solve the problem of an accidental tooth removal if the tooth comes out in the impression.
The first step is a thorough clinical examination which does not have to include impressions. This way your dentist can plan a solution with some alternatives if you need a back up . Also you need a treatment fees estimate for each option.
I think that you would probably need an extensive exam and Xrays to answer your qusestion and come up with a few treatment plans. Expect to pay around £50 for exam Xrays etc as a private patient.
OUr practice would be very happy to help.

Q. Hi, I have had white fillings on both of my 2 front teeth on the inside edge where they both meet. I have never really been happy with the result as they are a lot closer together than before hand, and they have a really dark shadow effect when I smile. What are my options here?
A. your option is to get these fillings replaced by a cosmetic dentist who will give you a good result. Or at least can tell you the alternative options if they do not think this is the correct restoration for you.

Q. could you tell me if you still get food deposits under a full denture when you have implants for the dentures to snap onto or are the implants just for security.also which implants are better,i’ve been recomended a full implant but have heard of mini implants.
A. Hi
1. sometimes you can get minor food deposits under the denture , but this is minimised if a good denture and close fitting denture is constructed.
2. There are many implants on the market. I personally tend to use astra, beacuse I have very good success rates with these.
3. I personally would not reccommend mini implants for the upper jaw. They may be cheaper, but they will not last as long as conventional implants.
I hope this helps

Q. Hello doctor, I have a very bad case of “overbite” which has plagued me since i was little. I guess sleeping with mouth open and sucking my thumbs didnt help. This caused my upper incisor and canines to shoot out at an angle. Its affected my confidence for many years. I will like to know if this can be treated and how? Also how much would it cost? thanks
A. There are a few different methods for perfecting teeth. The first one being orthodonitcs and the second one being Veneers. I recommend you book in for a consultation with an orthodontist and a cosmetic dentist to explore all of the options avaiable to you. From there you can assess which would be the best road for you to take.
kind regards

Q. I was told as a child I was unable to have a brace as I have an irregular shape jaw. I now have a gap when I bite my teeth together and so have difficulty biting food(I can easily get my little finger through the gap. I also have a very “gummy” smile and twisted front tooth and bottom teeth. Am I beyond help? Thanks for your time
A. You are not beyond help. Your first step is to book in with an orthdontist to see what can be done for your open bite ie how long you would have to wear a brace for a what type of brace they would recommend. The brace would also correct the twisted teeth.
Once you have had your brace removed, you may want to consult a cosmetic dentist to see what can be done for your gummy smile. There are a few different methods around for adjust gum length including simply using a laser which can be done in a matter of minutes.
Hope this has been of help to you

Q. I have heard of crowns coming off, but I have had a crown for about 18 years and it broke at dinner tonight. Is this normal, to break? Also, is it going to cost as much as an original crown to replace? Anything I should ask my dentist? On average how much less is a replacement vs. the original? Thank you for your time, I appreciate it very much.
A.
All dentistry fails in the end, 18 years is OK.
The cost will depend on the quality of the tooth left behind & NHS or Private. A replacement crown costs the same as a new crown as the work is broadly the same.
Questions to ask
NHS or Private
What is the diffference
HAs the root got any cracks in it
ON average how long should the replacement last.
NHS cost £198 Private £300-600 depends on +/- root canal treatment, cast posts etc

Q. Hi, I’m 25 years old and when i was 15 fell over an knocked out my front tooth. This was replaced with a crown. Recently i have took an abcess in my other front tooth and I also have a few filings. I do brush regularly and use mouth wash although I do not floss. My uncrowned front tooth as now discoloured and as i drink black tea and coffee I need my teeth whitened although with my crown this has always stopped me doing so as the crown would show more. I have lost my confidence and try not to smile often as i am not happy with my front teeth now. I would like them replaced but want them to look as real as possible whilst getting my teeth whitened a little. Is it possible for them to look like normal teeth and if so which, crowns of veneers etc and should this be done at a dentist or cosmetic company. Many thanks any advice welcome.
A.
You can most definately get a nice natural smile with Cosmetic Dentistry. As you can see in my portfolio http://www.umbrellasmiles.com/portfolio.html some people opt for a very white hollywood smile, but most go for a very natural, beautiful smile that they love to show off.
I woudl definately go to a Cosmetic Dentist for a smile makeover a not a general dentist as Cosmetic Dentists have had the extra training in order to give you exactly what you want.

Q. Hello, could you please tell me if i am entitled to a white filling on the fourth tooth from the front, I went to the NHS dentist last week for a small filling as there was a small patch of decay on the front of the fourth tooth along, I came out with a great big metal filling shining out at me, I was horrified. The following day it fell out. I have to go back tomorrow for a replacement but I am hoping as this is a very visable area i can request a white one. Many thanks.
A.
The NHS does not specify the material used. Its own research body NICE (the national institute for Clinical Excellence ) supports the use of amalgam ( metal ) as a suitable filling. IT is the dentists own choice to use an appropriate material, which in this case, amalgam is. THerefore it is likely that you would need to upgrade to a white filling as a private contract item.

Q. Dear Dr Suri. In 1987/8 every tooth in my head was fitted with a crown because they had all worn down. I have had little trouble with my crowns, apart from the two upper front teeth, One I had to have removed and a plate fitted the other came off about 10 years ago and was refixed and has not been a problem untill 2 months ago. My local Dentist refixed it with a new plastic pin but since then the tooth sticks out about 1.5mm I told the dentist I was not happy with the job but he says i need a new crown. I said if the original tooth and crown were drilled straight and the pin was straight hence the tooth was straight how come the tooth is sticking out at an angle. The Dentist could’nt give me a satisfactory answer but just kept saying I needed a new crown. This I could not accept as I am an engineer and unless the crown was wrongly drilled when getting the old pin out, if a new straight pin is fitted in the original holes the tooth must end up straight. My question is what do you think went wrong and how do I get my straight tooth back? Yours Truly
A.
The mouth is a dynamic functioning system and jaw movements and tooth position need to be in harmony with each other for teeth and restorations to last. When you originally had your work carried out it was obviously done to a very high standard for it to last 20 years.
When the tooth postion and jaw movemnts are not in harmony with one another, some teeth will be subjected to more pressure than they should. Due to this the body tries to restablish the equilibrium. It can do this in a few ways.
1) if the gums are weak the pressure will cause the teeth to become moblie and physically move out of the way so there is no restriction to jaw movements.
2)If gums and bone support is good the body will respond by wearing away the teeth. This may have been your original problem.
3) if the teeth are restored, excess pressure will result in the failure of that restoration. This will probably be the reason for failure of your front two teeth.
When a crown breaks off, some of the tooth usually breaks off with it. The two fractured parts can be approximated easily, the old crown can used again. This will have been the case when you first had a a post fit. This time, it was probably not very easy to fit the two parts together, therefore the the fit of the crown was no longer accurate. Even if the post hole was drilled straight down the long axis of the tooth, The best fit of the crown may have been slightly further forward. There is a possibilty, of course, that the post hole was not down the long axis of the tooth.
Due to the fact that the crown is now out of position and probably has a thicker layer of cement around the margin and the post may not be in the right position it would be advisable to have a completely new restoration placed.
Bearing in mind what I have mentioned previously, if the new crown is placed in the same postion as the old without looking at your chewing patterns it will also fail. There may need to be some adjustment of the lower teeth. Any crown placed on this tooth will not last as long as the other restorations that have been previously fit. The reason for this is everytime a new restoration is placed or a tooth is worked on it does deteriorate slightly and becomes weaker. The act of drilling causes micro fractures in the tooth. This is even more so in the root as the it is so much weaker than enamel.
I hope this answers your query.
Kind regards

Q. The teeth that are supposed to be between my front and K9 teeth are missing (they did not grow through as a child), because of this my front and K9 teeth are spaced out, leaving large gaps. I wondered what options would be available to me to get a ‘perfect smile’
A. hi many thanks for your enquiry, the best option would be to use orthodontics(braces) to create enough space between the front teeth and canine teeth and then place dental implants into the spaces. which would then give you the perfect smile.

Q. Hi Justin, I was your patient at Bourne End before I moved away. I would like veneers on my teeth now. My teeth are still good, it’s for the look. I like the idea of the Lumineers, how much would this cost please for 8 or 10 teeth. Are regular veneers much cheaper? Many thanks.
A.
There is no difference in price between Lumineers and Veneers at my Clinic. My Veneers and Lumineers are priced form £795 per tooth. I would be very happy to offer you a omcplimentary consultation with myself at my Harley Street Clinic to assess which method would be most suitable for you- I no longer practice at Bourne End. Q. I am 25 with a receding chin, smallish mouth and i dont have a great smile due to this,my teeth are not an issue to much,a brace is something i would consider, what are your thoughts on me having a more natural smile??
A. By a receeding chin, do you mean that when you close your mouth your lower teeth are further forward?
If so then orthodontics may be able to fix this for you but it may be that you need more extensive treatment. I recommend that you book in to see an orthodontist as braces are not my field. I can recommend Neil Couniham @ elleven orthodontics.
