I want teeth implants and am very nervous

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

Q. I am looking at getting teeth implants (most of my teeth are capped, filled or missing). I am nervous when visiting a dentist (which I havent for about 8years) If I get implants is this done under local/general anesthetic? Also can you recommend a good Dental Insurance Plan.

A. With the appropriate dentist you should be able to have dental implants under local anaesthetic or with IV sedation which is a better option than general anaesthetic as you do not fully lose consciousness.

I think you will find that any dental insurance company will not cover implant costs for pre-existing conditions but it may be worth a try

I have a pushed back tooth can I have a dental implant

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

Q. Hi I have a tooth that is pushed back and I am wondering about an implant. Would it be possible to remove the tooth and insert an implant in order that all my upper teeth are then in line. I hope to hear from you soon.

A. It is difficult to tell whether an implant would be possible without knowing how much space there is for an implant. There needs to be enough space between the roots of adjacent teeth and there needs to be enough room for the crown.

You may need braces to move the adjacent teeth to create space.
There is always the option of braces or veneers  to align all the teeth so that you don’t have to extract the tooth that is pushed back

The best thing to do is have a consultation with an implant dentist to find out what your options are

I want all my teeth replaced by silver teeth

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

Q. hi there i am thinking of getting all my teeth in to silver. would i have to have all my teeth ripped out to get them to silver ? How Much would it cost me to get all my teeth ripped out and replaced with silver teeth ?

A. It is very difficult to give you a cost for the treatment you want. I would not recommend you had your teeth extracted. I would recommend you to see a dentist if you wish to change the appearance of your teeth and discuss all the possible options.

I have gum sensitivity with dental crowns

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

Q. I appear to have some gum issues/sensitivity in relation to six crowns i have had fitted 4 years ago (replaced due to containing metal) to conceal tetracycline unsightly staining. What kind of dentist could assist me with a new set of crowns which might be biocompatible and kind to gums. Also…is it possible to develop breathing problems from a recently discovered tooth abscess. I am 43 and urgently need a good dentist conversant with the latest dental technologies.

A. when looking for a good cosmetic dentist, look at their postgraduate qualifications and look at their before and after cases.

With regards to gum irritation due to crowns – this can be prevented by a good design of the crown and by avoiding metal (if you are allergic to it).

To answer your final question, in very rare occasions an abscess can cause breathing problems only if the infection spreads in the surrounding tissue under your chin/mandible.
I hope this helps.

Do dental veneers hurt when you put them on

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

Q. Do veneers hurt? as katie prices (the model Jordan ) really hurt her?

A. veneers should not hurt. If the correct protocols are followed you should not be in pain after having veneers. To prevent problems with veneers, make sure you go to an experienced dentist who has an extensive postgraduate education on cosmetic dentistry. At our practice, we carry out many veneer cases and many of our patients have commented on how comfortable and pain free the procedure is.

I have a metal post and want straight teeth will braces work

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

Q. I have a metal post and crown on one of my front teeth, my 2 front teeth are slightly pertruding and the teeth behind them are slightly behind the front teeth. My dentist says a brace will not work due to the metal post. I would love straight teeth? An advice?

A. it would be best to take the advice of a good orthodontist. I’m not sure if braces would work on your crowned teeth but a specialist in brace treatment would be ble to tell you for sure.

You may be able to have a combination of brace treatment and restorative work. The braces could straighten out the lateral teeth and you could have new crowns placed on the two front teeth to give you a straight smile.
Hope this helps

I have a unsightly smile missing teeth broken teeth and want to smile again

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

Q. I have the most unsightly smile ever, i am 35 years old and have had this problem for a few years. I could not tell you when i was last able to smile as I really don\’t remember. i have 9 missing teeth and 4 broken teeth, all the broken teeth are at the front of my mouth (my smile teeth) and it is so embarrassing. The worst thing is i have always brushed my teeth, i don\’t eat sweets, i don\’t drink fizzy drinks, yet my teeth look like this. I am far to afraid of dentists to even go there, this i have tried on many occasions but every time i get to the dentists chair i make my excuses and leave. I would love to be able to smile again, but i know that i would not be able to afford it in this lifetime, how could i ever be able to smile again??

A. first of all, if you are nervous about dental treatment I would suggest you found a sympathetic dentist who is experienced treating anxious patients.
There are ways to improve a smile where there are missing teeth and these are:
- dentures (removable plates)
- bridges
-implants

Many practices, like ours, offer finance plan where patients can spread the costs and pay a monthly fee.

I have dentures for my top teeth held with fixadent

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

Q. Dr Suri, i have dentures for the top part of my teeth, with clips on to two back teeth either side of my mouth this been metal, i have to use a fixadent all the time for is so loose could you please advise me on the best treatment I can receive on this matter many thanks

A. it is possible to have a new denture made that is better fitting and may look better than the ones that you have. There are flexible types of acrylic available and attachments that can be used in conjunction with dentures that help to stabilise them so that they don’t move around.

Other treatment options could be a full mouth bridge if your remaining teeth are strong enough, failing this you may be eligible for dental implants if there is enough bone and you are in good health. The best thing to do is go and see a private dentist who is used to carrying a wide range of restorative procedures. This way you will be armed with the knowledge of the different treatments and can make the decision that best suits you.

I hope this helps

my gums are shrinking and I want a confident smile

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

Q. i am 57 years old and have shrinkage of the gums i have all my own teeth apart from a bridge at the bottom with 2 teeth on it .which i lost to loosening of the teeth hence gum shrinkage. would love a confident smile what can i do.

A. If your gums are healthy you may be a good candidate for a smile makeover. Veneers may be an option to restore your teeth, give you a beautiful, broad, straight white smile. The gums can be reshaped with a laser to make them look less receeded and give them a rounder shape. It is very difficult to advise you without seeing your teeth and looking at your gums to check whether they are healthy. It is always possible to improve your smile and feel confident when showing it off. If you are in the Buckinghamshire area or are willing to travel then I would be more than happy to see you for consultation to discuss different treatment options with you. Failing that, have a consultation with a dentist that is used to carrying out restorative as well cosmetic procedures and make sure that the dentist you see has a knowledge of ‘occlusion’. This is the study of how teeth fit together and how the jaws function. This is crucial if you are going to embark on any restorative or cosmetic procedures.
I hope this has helped you,

Do you know anywhere in Scotland that does Inman Aligner

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

Q. Hi there, can you tell me if there are any dental practices offering the inman aligner near the paisley area of scotland? What exactly is the process of the inman aligner? do you get a mould of your teeth and need to collect the aligner at a later date and also do you need to revisit the practice to have the aligner moved etc? how long does the whole process take from the first appointment till the teeth are straightened? and lastly what would the total cost be to get my upper and bottom front teeth fixed with the inman aligner? many thanks

A. I am not aware of any practices in Paisley offering the Inman aligner.
The first appointment will involve taking a mould of your teeth so that the lab can construct the aligner. The aligner will then be fitted a few weeks later. Treatment can take from as little as 6 weeks to 12 months. It all depends on the amount of crowding you have and on the complexity of the case.

I have a fear of the dentist and need teeth implanted

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

Q. i have always had a fear of going to the dentist for as long as i can remember, and with this fear and not that good of a childhood, it has taken its toll on my teeth, i am 30 this year, and want to have the smile i have always dreamed of, i think i need to have the remainder of what teeth are left removed and a new set implanting, how much would this roughly cost,

A. I would recommend you saw a sympathetic dentist that is experienced in treating anxious patients, to help you get used to having dental treatment and make you feel at ease during the visits.
The cost of implants can vary from £1800 to £2500 per implant. The cost per implant usually goes down as the number of implants goes up. For example, a case that would require replacing all the upper teeth, would require a minimum of 6 implants (the more the better), this would cost approximately from £10000.00.

I would like to have a white filling on my composite tooth

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

Hi, i had composite bonding done on my front teeth in the US about 10 years ago. I was biting my nails when part of the bottom of my front tooth came away. My NHS dentist applied a small white filling to the bottom of the tooth but it doesn’t feel right at all. I haven’t eaten anything on the front tooth for 2 weeks now, i’m so worried the filling will break off. Is it safe to add a white filling to a composite bonded tooth. I would like to go to a private dentist to have it fixed properly. Is this allowed, and can I still keep my nhs dentist for general dentistry. Thankyou

A. a white filling is a composite, therefore a white filling can be added to a composite and the bond should be strong enough if the correct principles are applied
Yes, you can see a private dentist for whatever treatment you wish and if you wish to go back to you NHS dentist this is possible as well.

I am looking for a good reputable dentist and hygienist

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

Q. Despite being a regular visitor to the dentist, over the years I have endured considerable dental treatments, some of which have been as a result of poor dentistry. As I approach my late 40\’s I am considering cosmetic dentistry to improve the appearance of my teeth but feel I first of all need a good regular dentist that I can trust and who will help me take good care of my teeth. My children have fortunately not suffered in the same way as I have and I am keen to ensure they are also receiving good quality dental advice. Other than searching through dentists registered with the BDA, is there any way I can find a very good reputable dentist and hygenist who will be able to provide appropriate dental advice/treatment to myself and my family. I am prepared to travel outside my immediate area if this is necessary.

A. The best way to find a good local dentist is word of mouth and recommendations from your friends or colleagues in your area.

If you can get some names then take a look at their website – a god progressive dental practice will usually be reflected in this way and you will be able to see the range of treatments and services they offer.

Alternatively you can do a google search for your area and then view the relevant practices.

I Have bad teeth gum disease wear and grinding TMJ problems

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

Q. Hi. I’ve very self conscious about my smile. I’ve always had problems with my teeth over the years. When I was younger I had many teeth out and they were never replaced. Since the age of 4 I have grinded my teeth with has caused wear on my teeth. Within the last year I tempted to visit the dentist again and he confirmed I had gum disease. I had treatment for this which was quite painful. The reason I went to the dentist is because I wanted my teeth straight as my bite is out of alignment and I thought it would help me with the grinding. The dentist told me I couldn’t have a brace as my teeth would probably fall out. I’m not sure now what to do, I’m very self conscious about what I look like and my two front teeth protrude. Also my jaw clicks so I think I might have TMJ. I have a real fear of the dentist as the ones I have been to have made me feel bad and haven’t been able to give me options to straighten my teeth. Do you have any advice?

A. I am so sorry to hear about your distress. The first thing you must do is be proud that you took that first step of visiting the dentist I know how difficult that can be. I am sorry the experience you got was not really what you wanted. I think you need to find a dentist who will listen to you and put you at ease so you can move forward. If your bone loss/ gums are so bad that orthodontics is not possible there are many other options that we could look at. I know that there is a solution for you. We need to address the jaw problems, gum disease and alignment of your teeth and you need to have a detailed consultation.
Please feel free to call by office or book in for a full consultation or a free chat so we can try to help you.

I have had an underbite and discoloured teeth all my life

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

Q. I would like to know if a problem i have had all my life can be corrected, to boost my confidence and smile without embarrassment. I am 47 years old, i have a underbite and feel that there is still some movement as my front top teeth are appearing off center and my facial appearance is changing, and to top it all off i have always had discoloured teeth.

A. There are now many ways we can improve the appearance of your teeth to try to give you back that confidence to smile. It is always difficult to advise you without seeing you but it sounds like we could correct your tooth alignment problems with some orthodontics such as invisalign.html” target=”_self”>Invisalign…which is very different from traditional fixed metal braces. After your teeth are aligned we could carry out some whitening to lighten your teeth or porcelain veneers to create that beautiful smile you want.
I hope this helps you

can my growing wisdom tooth cause pain in my other teeth

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

Q. My wisdom tooth is growing and I was wondering would this cause pain in my other tooth?

A. Wisdom teeth can be very painful. Not only can the pain come from the actual tooth but if can feel as if the surrounding teeth are painful as well. It is also common to have a lower wisdom tooth causing pain to your jaw, ear and surrounding areas. Wisdom teeth tend to hurt more when they are growing or moving. A simple pain relief technique is using hot water ( as warm as you can manage) with salt and bathing the painful area in this solution, ibuprofen & paracetamol can also help. If the pain does not get better it might be worth you considering having the tooth removed.

Front teeth fractured in Africa my NHS veneers fallen off

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

Q. Hi Dr. Suri, I am a 42 year old woman who due to a road traffic accident 18 years ago in Africa, had my front teeth fractured and weakened. About 3 years ago an NHS dentist was kind enough to restore my smile and began the long and scary process of vaneers, for which I was very grateful. Unfortuantly my vaneers are constantly falling off and breaking. It has now got to the point where I do not know where to turn next as I\’m constantly driving an hours drive back and forth to fix a tooth only to be back in the dentists chair within weeks. I can see this is not going to get sorted out as I have tried to talk to the NHS dentist who obviously can only work within the NHS guidelines and budget! As I type this to you I have awful tooth ache as a vaneer has come off once again and I can only be seen mid July for a consultation ONLY! If you have any advice that you could give me to end this nightmare I would be very much appreciative. Hope you can help?!!

A. If your veneers are constantly breaking and falling off then this tells me that they are some how intefering with your bite and chewing patterns. This can easily be evaluated through a simple examination with a dentist that has training in ‘occlusion’ the science of jaw movements and how they relate to teeth.
Veneers are not available on the NHS any more and when they were the materials were extremely basic. This could also account for the breakage.
The pain may be coming from sensitivity from the exposed tooth, or you may have recurrent decay underneathe the other teeth.

Please find a private dentist that has knowledge of cosmetic, restorative and occlusal procedures. If you are within commutable distance of my practice in Buckinghamshire I would be pleased to offer you an opinion and advice.

Can I have veneers I am too embarrassed to see a dentist

Saturday, June 28th, 2008

Q. on my front teeth i have fillings that are badly stained can i have veneers but im embarsed to go to see a dentist

A. please don’t be embarassed about your teeth. We see conditions much worse than stains on fillings and there are many things that can be done for you. You may only need replacment fillings to give the result that you want. Theses will however stain with time. If you do want to have veneers placed on your teeth, it is best to find a cosmestic/ restorative dentist to advice you.
If you would like to come and see me I can offer an opinion that may help you.
