I would like my front 4 teeth straightened I cannot find an inman aligner dentist near me

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Q. I would like my front four teeth straightened on the top and bottom row of my mouth. I am going away to america for a friends wedding in november and would love to have it finished before then so i would like something that is going to work quickly. i also nedd something which isnt going to be visible in the mean time and would prefer if it didnt cost a fortune. can you recommend any treatment plans and local practicioners to me. i have heard of the inman aligners but cannot find anyone who offers this treatment near me, many thanks

A. where are you based? if you let me know I may be able to help you. The Inman aligners are a great way of resolving mild crowding of the front teeth over a short time, usual few months. Clearstep and invisalign.html” target=”_self”>Invisalign are both very effective ways of treating crowding and if your case is mild, it could be treated in a matter of months.

I have malocclusion will I need jaw surgery to put it right

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Q. Hello. I would like some advice please? I am a 23 year old woman and i hadn’t been to the dentist for 10 years up until i went again when i was 19. There was nothing major that needed to be done – about 7 fillings due to tooth decay, but other than that, i was told my oral hygiene was good. My Dentist did however also tell me that i have malocclusion. She explained that this is where the teeth don\’t join together correctly. My bottom row of teeth come out slightly. This has made me very self conscious about the way i look. I have spoken to my Dentist about it on a couple of occasions and i have expressed that i would like something done about it, but she kept putting me off by saying treatment would be too expensive and possibly unpleasant. I have found this quite disappointing so, could i please ask for your advice? I was told that surgery is probably what will put it right – the thought of having my bottom jaw-bone broken somewhat unsettles me but i also thought about braces… Could this also be a possibility to put it right? I would be most grateful if you could help as this is something i really want to have put right but i don\’t know where to go to have this procedure done. I look forward to your response.

A. Can I ask whether you had a problem with your appearance before your malocclusion was pointed out to you?

Jaw position can either be determined by your skeletal patterns or it can be determined by your teeth. If your teeth and not fitting together properly it could be that your lower jaw is further out for this reason.

there are other options to surgery which are less invasive and it is always better to try these options first. There is something called equilibration that may be an option. This should only be done by a dentist that is trained in occlusion. This is a skill that most that most dentists don’t have and you need to find someone who has experience in this field. If you live in travelling distance of Buckinghamshire I would be happy to see you for a complimentary consultation. You don’t have to have treatment with me but it would be much easier to advise you as to the best course of treatment. If you are in the London area then Dr Justin Glaister who is also an expert on this website is very well trained in this field could see you.

Equilibration would cost between £300 and £1000 it just depends how involved it is but this is probably the cheapest option there is for you. Another option that may be available to you is orthodontics (braces).

I have 7 missing teeth can I have cosmetic dentistry

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Q. Hi can I have cosmetic dentistry even though i have 7 teeth missing at the top and 2 crowns

A. It is always possible to have something done whether it is implants, crowns or bridges. The most important thing is that you have healthy gums. This is the foundation of any restorative work that is carried out in your mouth and its longevity will depend very much on this. The best thing to do is find a restorative dentist who could have a look at your existing teeth and let you know the best course of treatment. If you are in the Buckinghamshire area I would be happy to see you for a complimentary consultation. If not make sure that the dentist you go to see also has training in occlusion. This is a knowledge of the relationship between the jaws and the teeth. This also needs to be correct for restorative work to be successful.

Is 70 years old too old to have botox and fillers

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Q. I am 70 years old,am i too old to have botox or fillers?A. I don’t think you ever too old.

A. combination of botox and fillers is the best. Dentists that have training can carry out these procedures but if I was you I would go to someone that does these procedures all the time. They will be used to using the different types of products and choose the ones that are best for your face. Registered grade nurses, doctors and dermatologists are able to carry out these procedures.

My new denture is uncomfortable can I have one that is like my old one

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Q. Dear Komal, I have just finished a series of dental treatments to replace a broken partial denture. My dentist recommended a metal frame denture.I found it so uncomfortable that i stopped wearing it and reverted to wearing my old broken one. I asked the dentist if I could just have a denture as identical to my old one as possible. It looked similar when it arrived but was also totally unwearable. The dentist assured me the bite was perfect, but i can’t wear either of them. The main difference i can see between my original denture and the new one is that the material used is so much thicker. my old denture was so comfortable i hardly knew it was there. So i have paid for two new dentures and can\’t wear either of them.Is it possible to have a denture made that is identical to my old one?

A. If your old denture was made years ago you will have had more bone in your mouth. Over the years bone shrinks back so in order to replace the lost bone acrylic is used. This is a reason why the new dentures were thicker. I’m assuming that you still have some of your natural teeth present. Usually chrome dentures are suggested so that they can be supported by the teeth as well as the gums. If your old denture broke due to flexing in the mouth as your bone has resorbed then a new denture that is made exactly the same will break as well. There is a flexible acrylic that is available now and it is used by certain laboratories. You would need to find a dentist that can provide you with this option as it may be more comfortable for you, thinner and deal with any flexing.

I have overcrowded front teeth will invisalign or veneers correct this

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Q. Hi. I have overcrowding on my top row teeth, just the front 6. This has made the front two forward, the next to either side pushed back and then the next two forward. I was wondering ifinvisalign.html” target=”_self”> invisalign would be suitable treatment, or if veneers could correct this.

A. I think you would be suitable for both types of treatment. There are pros and cons to each type and you have decide what is best for you. Invisalign can take 12 – 18 months. It does require commitment and perseverance. It costs approximately £5000. It is not destructive to your teeth and if they haven’t got any fillings in them this would be the best type of treatment.

Veneers are an option if you don’t want to go through a lengthy treatment. Veneers would require you to have your teeth shaved down. The amount of enamel removed would depend on the amount of crowding. It is not a good idea to have six veneers. In order for the smile to look good at the end of any treatment the teeth should be in proportion. To do this with crowded teeth means that often treating 4, 8 or 10 teeth is best. When 6 teeth are treated the posterior teeth get hidden and this can give the appearance that your front 6 teeth are prominent and can make you look a little goofy. If you decide to go for the veneer option definitely listen to the advice of the cosmetic dentist. We do these kinds of treatments all the time and can let you know what is best.
Good Luck with which ever treatment you decide on

One of my crowns has broken can it be replaced

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Q. I had two crowns (porcelain and metal) fitted 10 years ago to my front teeth. One broke recently. The dentist is unable to remove the posts from the gum in order to replace the crown. He did a composite on the broken tooth, but alas that has damaged my self esteem as it looks very unsightly. What is the best way to deal with something like this? I would like to replace the crown.

A.
It should not be necessary to remove the exiting post from the root of the tooth, as long as everything is healthy you should be able to have a new crown fitted over the existing post thereby improving the aesthetics. If your dentist cannot do this then maybe seek a second opinion

Does teeth whitening work with porcelin veneers

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Q. hi! can you get your teeth whitened if you have already had work done on them? ie. fillings. can you get just a couple of porcelin veneers and then the rest of your teeth whitened to match the colour or would it be noticeable and look silly?

A. To get the most natural appearance I would recommend whitening first then having any replacement veneers or fillings carried out to match the newly whitened smile.

My treatment for gum disease has left me with gaps between my teeth

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Q. i am being treated for gum disease, with good results, but my gums have receeding exposing gaps in between my teeth. The gap between my fron teeth is particularly bothering me – is there something I can do?

A.
I would consult the practitioner who is treating your gum disease and only look for corrective therapy once the gum disease has proven to have stabilised for the appropriate time.

They will be able to advise you whether you have enough bone support left to the teeth to undergo orthodontic treatment or whether porcelain veneers is a better way to close the gaps

I have a slight midline shift between my upper and lower teeth will braces work

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Q. I currently haveinvisalign.html” target=”_self”> braces for my upper arch only due to financial issues. I have a slight mid-line discrepancy between both arches. After the top braces are removed and my finances permit, I would like to know if this mid-line discrepancy can be fixed by braces on the lower arch only? Thanks.

A. If the midline discrepancy is slight – in my opinion this does not warrant further orthodontic work as the cost/benefit factor may not warrant it – if you are happy with your new smile no-one is going to notice the midlines – I would venture that 90% of the population have a slight discrepancy

My lower incisors are overcrowded and overlapping can I replace the teeth with an implant

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Q. The incisors of my lower teeth have grown overcrowded, resulting in some in them overlapping somewhat and also forcing one to protrude about 2mm higher than the others. I can’t see how a brace would help as there seems very little space to play with (I may be wrong, I often am). Is there anything I can do, like have the teeth removed and replaced with an implant, or is this too drastic given that the teeth are essentially healthy and my problem is purely cosmetic?

A.
it is very difficult to say what treatment you require to resolve your crowding without seeing your teeth and carrying out a clinical and radiographical examination.
Sometimes, a tooth can be extracted if is completely out of the arch and if it helps create some space for the other teeth to move into. I cannot say that this is the case for you.
I would recommend you see an orthodontist.

My front teeth don’t look good due to calcium deficiency what can I do

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Q. i have a calcium deficiency on my front two teeth, my dentist doesnt want to do anything about it as he said there isn’t anything wrong with my teeth its just for vanity reasons. What would be the best thing to to about my teeth i dont really like the idea of crowns, is there anything else i could look into?

A.
If you are happy with the shape and alignment of your teeth and you are only concerned about those marks, you can consider the options listed below:
- microabrasion of the tooth surface
- white composite fillings
- porcelain veneers.
Please bear in mind I have not seen your teeth so cannot guarantee these treatments are appropriate in your case.

What can be done to whiten my yellow teeth

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Q. I HAVE YELLOW TEETH. I WAS WONDERING WHAT CAN I DO TO GET THEM WHITEN AGAIN?

A.
You can have your teeth whitened using bleach. This works very well on normal discoloration. The home whitening kits with custom made trays work the best. These are only available from dentists. The products that you buy over the counter or receive from beauty therapists are either not strong enough or can be harmful. There is no guarantee that your teeth will go to the shade that you want but they will definitely get whiter. The only exceptions to this are if your teeth have tetracycline staining and fluorosis. Whitening doesn’t work as well in these cases. If you have tried whitening before and don’t want to do it again then you could always investigate having veneers placed on your teeth so that they are the colour that you want

I hope this has helped

A. I am sorry to hear about your circumstances.
There are many people in your same situations. At our practice we see many nervous patients from all over the UK. We help these patients either with behavioural management or by IV sedation.
There is no need to be frightened as dentistry has changed a lot in the last few decades and there are many caring approachable dentists around. The first step – going to your first appointment- will be the hardest, but if you find the right dental team, you will soon feel more at ease at your subsequent appointment

Can you have dental implants if diabetic

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Q. I am diabetic, can I have dental implant treatment?

A
. You can have implants if your diabetes is well controlled. This is very important as in poorly controlled diabetics healing can be impaired. I have placed many implants on well controlled diabetics and they have been successful.

I fell off my bike and knocked my teeth out how much would this cost to repair

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Q. ok im i fell of my bike while going real fast on a paved rode and i fell face first and its like the concrete knocked my two front back in my mouth ! And my left one fell out but the doctors put it back in and it looks smaller than my left tooth is there a operation i can get to make them both look even and straight? and how much would it cost ? if you have a email i could send you a picture of how my front teeth look if needed?

A. The tooth that has been re-implanted into the socket has to be kept under observation over a period of time to make sure that the blood supply is still intact.
In the meantime, while this is under observation a white (composite) filling could be added to make the tooth look symmetrical to the right one. If the tooth appears to be healthy over a period of time and you are not happy with a white filling you could consider veneers.
I cannot guarantee that this is the appropriate treatment for you without doing clinical and radiographic assessments. I would therefore recommend you went for a consultation so that you will be able to have a more definitive answer.

I want empress veneers what do you think about these

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Q. Hello, I am thinking of having Empress Veneers , I am interested to know what the proffessional opinion of these type of veneers is. Also quite importantly, the first appointment will be to prepare the teeth, then a week later the veneers will be fitted. I really wouldl like to know how the teeth will be left for that week, will it be noticable that they have been prepared and will they hurt for that week?

A. There are many types of veneers on the market, Empress being one of them. The choice of veneer types depend on:
- clinical circumstances
- technician and dentist’s preference
Empress veneers are excellent veneers if made prepared correctly by the dentist and made by a good technician.
As you correctly mentioned, the first appointment will consist of preparing the teeth for the veneers, the temporaries which are made should be a prototype of what your veneers will look like. If done correctly, these should cause you no problems.
It is very important when looking for a postgraduate dentist, to look for their postgraduate qualifications and look at before and after photos.

I have a deep overbite and want genioplasty to reposition my pronounced jaw

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Q. I dont really know where to start or what the clinical terms are for my particular problem..I have an extremely deep overbite where my top jaw completely bites over my bottom jaw.. this causes my lower face to look collapsed and my chin is very pronounced ( apparently this is because my lower jaw has had to take the weight from my upper jaw. I was meant to have corrective surgery on my jaw when I was younger but my parents couldn’t afford it, I have always been so embarrassed about my side profile as it makes me look like a witch ….and I now at 24 years old want to have the surgery I should of had as a child. My question is: – What is the cost involved in surgery to reposition my jaw AND then have genioplasty to reduce my pronounced jaw (chin)? …AND would I have to have braces fitted again? ..I did have braces about 7 years ago to close some large gaps as I am missing teeth (I had braces on for 3-4 years) ..I then got 3 bidges on my front lower teeth to fill these gaps.. So my teeth have been relatively sorted out but my jaw and the semitry of my face is ALL wrong. Please could you estimate a price of this type of surgery and recommend a good surgeon? Thanks a bunch.

A. It is very difficult for me to give an estimate for the treatment you enquire about as it is a very specialist subject.
I would recommend you go and see an orthodontist and if he/she agrees that there is a need for surgery then he/she will be able to refer you to an oral surgeon with special interest in orthognatic surgery. In cases like this the oral surgeon and orthodontist liase with each other.

I am unhappy with my 2 new veneers please help

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

Q. I have just recently had 2 porcelain veneers. Basically the teeth at either side of my 2 front teeth, were a little too small for the space and I didn’t like it much. I asked my dentist about veneers and he said that they would improve my smile. However, I can really feel them. When I run my tongue over my mouth, I feel how ‘raised’ the veneer is compared to my own teeth and I don’t know if this is normal. Also, the veneer doesn’t feel like a tooth on the ‘bottom’. It feels thicker a little rounded, unlike my own teeth. Is this what veneers are like? I really am not happy and I haven’t got what I expected. Please help!

A. I have seen many people that have had veneers just like yours. It sounds like your dentist has placed veneers on your teeth without any preparation. This means that he hasn’t drilled your teeth. This is good in a way because it means that your teeth are strong and healthy underneath the porcelain. For the teeth to feel like your other teeth, the two side ones may have to be shaved down slightly. If your dentist doesn’t regularly do cosmetic procedures he/she may think this means drilling your teeth down into stumps. This isn’t the case. Enamel does have to be removed but it can be done very minimally and the tooth can still remain healthy whilst giving you the result that you want.

For veneers to be successful the dentist has to know what they are doing and but the laboratory that makes them also need to know what they are doing and should carry out these procedures regularly.

As an example if someone came to me with your problems, models and photographs are taken before hand. I would normally make a wax mock up of the veneers on this and then prpare the teeth a little so that you end up with thin edges. Once the preparations are done and the temporaries are placed on the teeth I would shape them so that they are in harmony with the rest of your smile. The next day I would see you again to make sure that you are happy with the general shape and make sure that speech is unaffected. To get an exact colour match you would have the option of going to the laboratory to have a colour match done so that the new veneers match your other teeth. Shape is also taken into account.

Veneers should feel normal once they are placed. If you are not happy you should go to see a dentist who is used to carrying out these procedures. Veneers are not inexpensive. You should be prepared to pay between £600 and £1200 per tooth if the dentist has the knowledge and experience required to do it properly
