I want a straightish smile what can be done apart from braces?

Monday, February 25th, 2008

Q. The teeth next to my front teeth are set behind, then i have my fang teeth going over them. I am desperate to have at least a straightish smile. What could i have done, apart from braces?? i am 25.

A. Dear D

Veneers often help in this type of case. A typical case would cover at least the six front teeth, sometimes the front ten teeth. Because you are changing the alignment of the teeth there will be some compromises. Some teeth will need to be drilled, the thickness of the biting edges will be differ from tooth to tooth and the final shape of each tooth. We can computer simulate some of these factors to show you how it might look.

More radically some cases are suitable to extract teeth and replace them with bridges, you definitely need a thorough clinical exam before discussing that any further.

You might also reconsider braces particularly if you are suitable for invisalign.html” title=”invisalign“>invisalign or clearstep .

I can do a free consultation to discuss the best direction for you. Costs are incurred for XRays and computer simulations.

I have teeth gaps do your teeth get filed down to pegs for veneers

Monday, February 25th, 2008

Q. I have gaps in my top set of teeth and have always wanted to be rid of them and have an even gap free smile. I have been browsing the web to see that this problem is more often than not gotten rid of with veneers however I was under the impression your own teeth get filed down to mere pegs for the veneers to be fitted please can you confirm if this is the case, thank you.

A. Dear Kate

If your teeth are in relatively good alignment then veneers can be a very minimally invasive treatment when carried out by a dentist who has been trained in Cosmetic procedures.

If you think of a veneer as approx. 0.5 mm thick then this is the amount of reduction from the front of the tooth in order to make room for the veneer – yet the end result will be a smile of your design with no gaps in a relatively short time.

See this link for an example of this type of work http://www.umbrellasmiles.com/portfolio.html

However it is important to note that braces can also be used to achieve closure of gaps

I hope this info is of help

I want to straighted my teeth should I get invisalign or train tracks?

Monday, February 25th, 2008

Q. Hi there, I am 32 years old and really want to straighten my teeth. I have all of my own teeth except for the one that comes after the corner incisor on the right side of my mouth which was extracted when I was 9 years old. The dentist said my jaw on the right side was too small for the size of my teeth so he pulled it out. He gave me two braces, but they didn’t really do much. As a result, because of having an extra tooth on the left, the front six teeth are slanting over to the right. My teeth look normal on the left side when I smile but not normal on the right side. The wisdom tooth on the right side is down, bacuse there was room after the extraction, but on the left side, because of the extra tooth, the wisdom tooth is not fully down. I have a bit of overcrowding on the bottom front but my jaw appears to be straight. Can invisalign work for my teeth or should i get train tracks? Thanks, A

A. Hi A,

You appear to describe what is termed a “centerline shift” . This means that your front teeth do not line up with the midline of your face giving the appearance that your teeth are off to one side. The reason for this is very much as described by yourself.

Correction of such a condition is difficult even with the train tracks or invisalign.html” title=”invisalign invisible braces”>invisalign. Whether it can be corrected with invisalign is going to have to be determined clinically so i would advise you get yourself down to your dentist and ask what your options are! The success of either of these treatments depends on maintaining your oral health so ensure you are doing everything you can to do this.

Dental implants on denture in Cyprus or Saudi Arabia

Monday, February 25th, 2008

Q. I have worn a top denture for over 30 years and have only 7 front bottom teeth and one back one, so my bite is not very good, I would like to have implants to the top or if I am not suitable maybe a implant supported denture, my problem is where to go to get them done as I live in Saudi Arabia but also have a home in Cyprus, could you recommend the best place for cost and timescales. regards P

A. Hi P,

I am afraid i know very little about that side of the world with regards to dentists out there who practice implants. The first place to start is the web, doing a solid amount of web research in the areas where you live will help you get idea of those dentists practicing implants. The following things to look out for are accreditations to known dental organisations and those that you feel comfortable with.

Treatment in the UK for dental implants“>dental implants cost approximately £2000 per implant and takes about 9- 12 months to have the implant fully functioning should there not be any complications.

I hope this helps

How much does invisible braces for upper inscisors cost?

Monday, February 25th, 2008

Q. My upper inscissors are not straight, they make it difficult for me to keep my mouth closed. Do you think the invisalign.html” title=”invisalign invisible braces”>invisible braces would help? Or what do u advise me to do and what is the rough estimate I might spend for treatment. Thanks

A. The condition of your teeth, your age and several other factors would affect the answer. You would need an examination to find this out. Private orthodontic treatment is often £3000-6000. It depends on who is doing the treatment and the technique used. I would recommend getting at least two opinions before starting treatment.

Good luck

What sort of dental crown should I get for £1500 ?

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

Q. My dentist recommends a titanium implant at £1634 for a missing incisor. He says this will also require an anterior crown at £1500. This seems expensive for a crown. What sort of quality ought I expect for this sort of money?

A. Dear M

A very good crown
While judging on cost alone is not easy to asses the worth, the quoted fees give you a lot of scope. Birmingham average implant & crown charges are around £1800 -2800 at the £1800 end you are often charged the assessment fee +/- bone graft fees in addition. Also the dental implants“>implant manufacturers are of varying costs and quality. I personally use an expensive system for me to buy but over 10 years personal experience with Astratech

Back teeth removed at age 26 can I wear dentures or caps?

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

Q. Hi Doctor, I am a 26yr old male and I had three of my back teeth removed yesterday. Two on my right lower jaw and one at the left upper jaw. I was just wondering how, if I was one of your patients, you would go forward from here. Can I wear dentures or caps or what.

A. Hi S

If you were one of my patients I would want to know why you were losing 3 teeth at 26 years old. The first priority would be to control any causative factors.

If you choose not to replace the missing teeth you can manage on around 20 teeth if they have good functional contacts when your jaw closes to chew.

Replacing the missing teeth depends on whether there is a tooth either side of the gap. If there is and the teeth are in reasonable condition, you could have a bridge. If there is no back tooth you would require an implant or a denture, your suitability for either option requires a thorough examination and possible special jaw scans in the case of dental implants“>implants.

We offer a free consultation as a first step , you can then discuss costs carry out further tests & decide on your options

My fixed retainer came off and my gap between my front teeth opened

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

Q. As a child I wore a fixed retainer for 18 months to close a gap between my two front teeth, a fixed retainer was also placed on the back of the teeth to prevent it reopening in the future. However the retainer on the back came off, my dentist took it off completely as he said there was no point replacing it. Since the gap has opened slightly. I will not wear a fixed retainer again would there be any other way to close the gap and prevent it reopening? I have an appointment with an orthodontist but it is expensive and I really don’t want to go if the only option would be to wear a fixed retainer. Thanks

A. Dear C,

It does seem that the retainer was the way forward for you as the gap only occurred once this was removed. Unfortunately I do not specialise in orthodontics so you would need to get the expert opinion of an orthodontist who would look into you’re mouth and tell you all of you’re options, so you have done the right thing booking in to see one.

Now I am 50 I dont have white teeth they have discoloured

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

Q. I was always proud of my ‘white’ teeth as a younger man. I am now 50 years old and my teeth have discoloured. I don\’t smoke or drink, and take very few curries. Therefore I fear it’s my age that has contributed to the colour of my teeth. For the first time in my life, I am very concerned about my teeth. How can my problem be rectified?

A. Dear Mr C,

As you get older, unfortunately it is a fact that you’re teeth will naturally discolour. This can be rectified very simply with teeth whitening. Most dentists offer teeth whitening and it is does not harm your teeth in any way. The only side effects may be a little bit of sensitivity for up to 24 hours.

If i have a bridge on 3 implants will the new teeth need to be thicker than my own?

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

Q. I have 6 missing front teeth. If I have 3 implants and then a bridge for the 6 teeth will the new teeth be the same thickness as my real teeth or will they have to be thicker to make the bridge strong enough.

A. The restorations should be around the same thickness of you’re teeth were. I recommend that when you go to see the Implantologist for a consultation that you ask to see a portfolio of his/ her work to put you’re mind at ease.

My front teeth have no roots and are discolored teeth whitening or veneers?

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

Q. My top front teeth have not got root any more for which reason discoloring occured. also my teeth have been suggewsted braces. should I go for braces and whitening or veneers. I am clueless. please help.

A. Dear S,

Teeth whitening“>Teeth Whitening will not give you the result that you want with the teeth that have been Root Treated. This is because Teeth Whitening works on whitening the enamel of your teeth, where as the discolouration on the Root treated teeth has happened internally. I would discuss with your dentist the option of internal whitening on these specific teeth although this does not always give a perfect result.

With Veneers you have can control what colour they are, i.e: matching the colour of the rest of you’re teeth. But Veneers are not suitable for everyone and without looking at you’re teeth I couldn’t advise you’re suitability. I suggest that you make an appointment to see a dentist to discuss you’re concerns in further detail.

Lumineers veneers for my sensitive teeth?

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

Q. I have very sensitive teeth. My dentist has suggested that I have 6 teeth veneered. I prefer the idea of lumineeers . When are these not suitable? Are they harder to colour match. How long would it take from start to finish and what is the approx cost. How long would ordinary veneers take to fit and what would be the cost?

A. Dear H,

Regarding treating sensitivity with veneers it wouldn’t always be my first choice, sometimes simple fillings added to the tooth surface would be an easy way to assess the benefit of veneers.

Lumineers are best when you don’t have to mask heavy discolouration or correct large discrepancies for alignment, you can still use them but the added benefits vs conventional veneers are less. A good case would be closing spaces between teeth. Colour match is an issue if you are changing/ masking natural colours.

£5-600 per lumineer ( depends on build up )

Ordinary veneers take the same time to fit, polishing margins is important, 30 minutes per veneer sometimes two visits to polish this is the same as lumineers Cost £420 per veneer

Treatment for crooked teeth in Liverpool invisalign or veneers?

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

Q. My two front teeth are crooked and my fangs sit forward from the rest of the teeth, I was given a brace as a teenager but hated it and didn’t wear it. What treatment would you recommend and do you know of a good cosmetic dentist in the liverpool area ?

A. Hi J, you have two treatment options

1: to have another brace, either the conventional sort or if suitable the invisible brace option invisalign.

2: The second treatment option would be to veneer the teeth into alignment. This would require preparing the teeth to align them and them placing the veneers (porcelain fronts) onto the teeth to then improve the shape colour and alignment. Hope this is helpful. My clinic is based in Manchester close to the Trafford centre so if you do not mind travelling 40 minutes i am happy to see you for a free consultation.

Do I need extraction orthodontics for forward front teeth gaps ?

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

Q. I am 24 years old. I have space between the forward teeth, they are forwardly placed as well.Is it necessary to get removed teeth for orthodontics treatment ? D

A. Hi D,

The problem you mention is very common, whilst I cannot say for certain without a clinical examination, if you have spacing present, then you should not need to have teeth removed just to correct the gap at the front.

Removal of teeth will probably be aimed at correcting something else, however recently orthodontics has advanced to allow for teeth to be moved without the need to extract, and now teeth are only removed in the most severe cases.

My front tooth is sticking out can i replace it with an implant?

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

My 1 front tooth is sticking out is there any way i can have it out and have an implant put in or any other treatment as i do not want any kind of braces

A. Dear S

If you’re tooth is sticking out there are 3 ways to treat it. The best way is by orthodontics as it is the least invasive and best way to treat it. Treatment time can be as little 3 months with invisible orthodontics, the treatment is very discreet and flexible to fit in to your lifestyle. The next option is to try to reduce the portion of tooth that sticks out and place a porcelain veneer, depending on how much of your tooth sticks out will determine the extent of treatment required, although this is a much quicker treatment it can be very aggressive. The final option would be to remove the tooth and place a implant this is the longest treatment time and most aggressive. All these ideas are speculative, as I would need to assess you before coming up with definitive options.
I hope this helps.

What subjects should I study to start a course in dentistry?

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

Q. I was just wandering what subjects i would need to start a course in dentistry i dont want to know the courses to take just the basic subjects i need and i also need to know the best dentistry universities in the UK thanks alot

A. Hi G

Firstly dentistry is a great job, its very diverse in its challenges, there really is something for everyone.
Basic sciences are good, especially Chemistry because they assume you have a good background in this, many students have Biology although this is less important because what you are taught on the course covers this in detail. I qualified from Newcastle, it is a highly rated research establishment, you could ring the admissions office of most dental schools they will have been assessed for research & the quality of teaching. It is important that you choose the right study environment for you. I love Newcastle because I loved the whole experience, Many graduates feel the same about their university.

should the dr prepeare the cutting edge for composite veneers?

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

Q. Hi Dr in composite veneers should the Dr prepare the cutting edge?

A. Dear K
this is a rather specific question that your dentist will be able to guide you on.

My point of view would be as follows:

It all depends on the type of bite you have. If you have a “heavy” bite and your teeth show wear then my advice is not to prepare the edge. If you have mild to no forces on the cutting edge ( some people ’s front teeth do not touch) then overlapping the incisal edge would be fine. Your dentist may have their hands tied if you have very discoloured teeth. This may force them to prepare the edge to cover up the discoloration.
At the end of the day your dentist will take all of these factors into consideration and hopefully give you an excellent end result.

I have had dentures since I was 24 could I have dental implants?

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

Q. I have dentures and i am only 44 years old i have been wearing dentures still i was 24 years old. i am always having dentures due to keep going to big for my mouth so keep slipping. would i be able to still qualify for implants due to many years i have been with out my own teeth.

A. Dear L,

Thank you for your question.

You did not specify whether you dentures were replacing all of your teeth or just some of your teeth. Either way you may have lost bone in the areas where we wish to place the implants. If this is the case a bone grafting procedure may well be possible for us to increase the available bone to place the implants in. The lower jaw is most likely not to have to have grafting as the bone tends to be thicker than in the upper jaw.

A full assessment with X-rays ( possibly a CAT scan) should be carried out to determine whether you need bone grafting. There are many people who have had the benefit of this type of dentistry and have been able to live their lives without having to wear a denture. The sooner you find a dentist to treat you the more likely that you will not have to have the bone grafting procedure.

How much will a bridge for 4 teeth and 2 dental implants cost?

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

Q. I need a bridge to cover 4 front teeth and 2 implants on the left side can you give me a price quote as near as possible please

A. Dear M,

It is always difficult to give you a costing as there are a lot a variables that needed to be assessed. For instance do you need a bone graft to allow for the placement of the implants, are the teeth supporting the bridge free from infection or do they need some treatment prior to making the bridge, does your bite need evening out ( equilibration ) prior to any of this treatment etc. Provided that there are no extra treatments required a typical case requiring the treatment you outlined would cost in the region of £9000.

My best advice would be for you to have a comprehensive examination to allow proper assessment of you situation.
