Oral Microbiology is concerned with the laboratory-based diagnosis of infections of the face and mouth. These are usually bacterial or fungal infections.

What is a specialist in Oral Microbiology and what do they do?

A specialist in Oral microbiology usually works in academic units, and may provide training as well as a role in diagnosis of oral infections.

What additional training and qualifications does a specialist in Oral Microbiology need?

Specialist training consists of a minimum of five years and is provided by the Royal College of Pathologists. A CCST will be awarded following successful completion of the Membership examination of the Royal College of Pathologists (MRCPath) in either Oral Microbiology or Medical Microbiology.
