Root canal

The root canal is contained in the root which is located in the bottom two thirds of the tooth. The root is filled with pulp, which contains blood vessels, connective tissue and nerves. The primary function of the root canal is to join the nerve from the root at the bottom of the tooth, to the crown at the top of the tooth. When the pulp becomes infected and is not treated, infection often spreads to the root canals; this can cause the bone to disintegrate, meaning the teeth can become loose and fall out. Root canal treatment is often used to clean out the pulp in the tooth; this can prevent further spread of infection and the formation of cavities and abscesses.
