Selective immunoglobulin deficiencies and your oral health

Immunoglobulin deficiencies affect the B-cells. B-cells are a type of white blood cell. They make antibodies that fight against bacteria and foreign agents in order to prevent infection. Patients who have immunoglobulin deficiencies are lacking one or more types of immunoglobulins or antibodies. The most frequent immunoglobulin deficiency is the lack of immunoglobulin A. This appears in secretions like saliva. Patients that have a deficiency in immunoglobulin A are susceptible to chronic lung infections, chronic sinusitis, digestive problems, autoimmune diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, and even lupus.

Your dentist will exert all efforts in order to reduce the risks of infection if you have immunoglobulin deficiencies. In order to reduce the risks of infection, you will be given antibiotics before, during, and after the treatment. In order to minimize complications with the antibiotics, you should let your dentist know about all the medications you are taking and their corresponding dosages. You should also let your dentist know if you are allergic or sensitive to certain types of medications.
