Dilaceration

Dilaceration is the displacement of a part of a developing tooth, which affects the shape and growth of the tooth; the tooth often becomes twisted or crooked. The curvature can occur in any part of the tooth and is dependent upon the extent of root development at the time of displacement. Dilaceration often occurs after the deciduous tooth has been affected by dental trauma or decay. Examples of dental trauma include an accidental fall, sports injury or a road traffic accident. If the tooth or surrounding area is seriously affected by dilacerations it may require orthodontic treatment or extraction.
