Diastema
Diastema: the term diastema refers to a gap between the front teeth on the upper jaw, which can occur naturally or as a result of an accident or tooth decay meaning a front tooth is lost. Diastemas can often make people very self-conscious; they are, however, fairly common and can be treated by orthodontic treatment using a brace, or a retainer if the case is not so serious. Braces use prolonged continuous force to push the teeth together and close the gap, meaning the teeth are straighter and the individual’s smile is more attractive. Braces can be painful and many people feel self-conscious wearing them; however the results are excellent in most cases and in the long-term people will feel much happier with their teeth and general appearance. If a tooth is missing, a prosthetic tooth can be fitted in its place. In addition, if the gap is caused by the front teeth being too small, veneers can be fitted to make the teeth larger and therefore reduce the gap between them.
