Desquamation

Desquamation refers to the peeling or shedding of skin. In dentistry, desquamation relates to the peeling of gum (gingival) tissue; during this process the tissue may appear shiny and smooth with a slight grey tinge. Once the gum tissue has peeled, the tissue underneath will appear bright red; it may be painful and may bleed for a while.
