Dentition

Dentition: the term dentition refers to the arrangement and growth of teeth in the mouth. There are four different types of tooth which each occupy a different position in the mouth. The back teeth, molars are the strongest teeth and are used most commonly for grinding and breaking up food. Each adult has 12 molars arranged in 4 groups of 3 (at the top and bottom of the mouth on each side). The premolars are situated between the canine teeth and the molars; they are slightly smaller than the molars and there are only 8 of them. Premolars are also used to crush food. Each adult has 2 pairs of canine, or cuspid teeth; these are more pointed and sharp than our other teeth and are used for gripping food. Finally, at the front of the mouth there are usually 8 incisors; these teeth are generally the smallest and are used to cut up food.
