Dentin

Dentin is one of the four major component materials of teeth, along with enamel, pulp and cementum. The primary function of dentin is to protect the enamel on the tooth. It is a hard, yellow substance; the colour of dentin can impact significantly on the visual appearance of an individual’s teeth depending on the thickness and strength of their enamel; as the enamel wears away, the teeth appear increasingly yellow due to the increased visibility of dentin. Dentin is formed throughout the course of a person’s life, unlike enamel which wears as we age. Dentin is made up of millions of tubules which create a three dimensional structure; these tubules contain fluid and although dentin is hard, sometimes this fluid can seep through causing discomfort and possible tooth decay.
