Decalcification
Decalcification describes the loss of calcium from the teeth and bones. This process can be caused by a build-up of plaque on the enamel-covered portion of the tooth; if left untreated plaque can cause cavities and tooth decay. Decalcification is common in children or adolescents who wear braces as it can be difficult to brush the whole of the tooth. Cavities are usually visible on the enamel surface as small white spots; if cavities expand it may be necessary to have then filled.
It is important to maintain a good standard of oral hygiene in order to reduce the risk of decalcification; this includes regular brushing, flossing and rinsing as well as frequent visits to the dentist. It is also advisable to eat a healthy and well-balanced diet; sugary and acidic foods and drinks can speed up the decalcification process so it is important to limit the intake of these items. Fluoride toothpaste also helps to strengthen teeth.
