Curettage

Curettage is the process of taking any dead tissue away from the gum pocket. Depending on the area affected, there are different approaches and instruments needed. Gingival curettage refers to the removal of swollen or dead tissue from the area immediately surrounding a tooth (the periodontal area) using a spoon-like instrument known as a curet. Periapical curettage relates to the bony area surrounding a tooth and the smoothing of the tooth surface while ultrasonic curettage involves the use of an ultrasonic scaler to remove swollen tissue from the surface of the tooth.
