Cast
A dental cast is a prosthetic, which is usually formed by creating a mould of a patient’s teeth. Dental casts can be used for diagnosis and educational purposes. Casts can also be used for moulding partial or full dentures, dental bridges, crowns and implants. It is important to base prosthetic devices on casts because they simulate the patient’s mouth; therefore any new devices will fit better and be more comfortable for the patient. Well-fitting prosthetics are also beneficial in terms of a patient’s occlusion which will subsequently improve their speech and the physical appearance of their smile. Casts are formed by creating an impression of the mouth using an impression medium and then being left to set once the casting material has been applied.
