Caries

Caries, also known as cavities or tooth decay, are holes in the teeth caused by bacterial processes. Bacteria attacks the hard structures of the tooth (the enamel, dentin and cementum), causing them to gradually break down. If a cavity forms it may need to be filled by means of a filling or restoration. If a cavity is left untreated, the tooth may fall out or it may have to be extracted. Bacterial infections and decay can spread quickly so it is important to visit the dentist regularly in order to detect cavities early. A high standard of oral hygiene should be maintained in order to prevent the formation of caries.
