Asymmetry / Symmetry
Asymmetry refers to a lack of symmetry; symmetry is the exact correspondence of one object or structure to another on the opposite side; for example the positioning and the appearance of the teeth on the left side of the dental arch in relation to the appearance and positioning of the teeth on the right side of the mouth. In order to have good symmetry in the mouth the shape and size of the tooth and the shape of the gum contour should be as similar as possible on both sides of the mouth. If there is a significant degree of asymmetry in the mouth, procedures such as altering the appearance or shape of a tooth may be undertaken. It may also be necessary to have treatment if the lack of symmetry is causing problems related to eating and speech.
