Antibiotics
Antibiotics are medications made from living microorganisms and are designed to prevent the growth and spread of other living organisms, such as harmful bacteria, in the body. Antibiotics target specific infections caused by harmful microorganisms, such as fungi or bacteria, by killing them or changing the natural environment in which they live and breed.
When can antibiotics be used?
Antibiotics only reduce the effects of bacterial infections, such as an ear infection, and therefore cannot fight viral infections such as the common cold, flu and the majority of coughs; taking antibiotics for such an illness can actually do more harm than good. Illnesses such as coughs and colds should be treated with over the counter pain remedies such as paracetamol and ibruprofen, coupled with drinking plenty of water, lots of rest and vitamin C. Antibiotics are not available over the counter and must be prescribed by a doctor; taking antibiotics can alter the effects of other medication, such as the contraceptive pill and therefore this must be discussed with a doctor prior to the antibiotic being prescribed. It is extremely important to follow the recommended dose and to finish the course; stopping the medication early can reverse the positive effects achieved previously.
Side Effects of antibiotics
Antibiotics are safe for everyone on the whole, but some people may suffer from side effects such as irritable skin and nausea; if symptoms persist discuss this with your GP. Prolonged use of antibiotics or taking them when not wholly necessary can lead the bacteria in the body to build up a resistance, meaning that the antibiotic will be less effective as time goes on; try to lead as healthy a lifestyle as possible including eating a varied diet full of vitamins and minerals to build up your immune system rather than relying on medication.
