Amalgam

An amalgam is a mixture of metals. In dentistry, amalgams are used as a restorative material; the most commonly used amalgams are silver-based. Amalgam fillings are cheaper than composite, or white, fillings as they are clearly visible in the mouth. Amalgam fillings are hard and durable and are therefore most commonly used to restore the surfaces of the posterior teeth; these include the premolar and molar teeth.
